Football: Blues and Bristol draw 1-1

Birmingham City Blues drew 1 – 1 with Bristol Academy this weekend, in what was the first-ever live televised fixture to take place at Stratford.

The game, which had previously been postponed on two occasions due to a waterlogged pitch, had a lively start from both sides and Bristol’s keeper Siobhan Chamberlain was called into action early to save a solid strike by Jade Moore.

It didn’t take too long for the Blues to get past Chamberlain however , as Jodie Taylor took on the ball from Chelsea Weston and scored the first goal of the match, in the 18th minute.

Only four minutes later however, Bristol had equalised, thanks to a goal from Natasha Harding.

The tempo of the game dropped considerably and it was only half-chances for both sides for the remainder of the first-half.

Both sides continued to trade blows after the break and player of the match Karen Carney was called into defensive action in the 53rd minute to head Harding’s shot off the line after Jess Fishlock’s dangerous corner had sparked panic in the box.

Sadly, the game petered out into a scrappy affair in the closing stages, with a draw appearing to be was a fair result.

Following the match, the Blues moved up to second position in the FAWSL on goal difference, with Arsenal still securely in the top spot.
