Becoming the first ever female boxer to win an Olympic gold medal is a the fulfilment of a lifelong dream for Nicola Adams.

Nicola AdamsThe flyweight dominated her final against China’s Ren Cancan, winning 16-7 at the ExCeL in London.

These Games are the very first to feature women’s boxing, meaning Adams’ -51kg bout was the very first final, allowing her to make her own piece of history.

The 29-year-old European Champion put Cancan on the canvas, and landed a series of big blows throughout the four-round bout.

“It’s absolutely amazing. I can’t believe the support I have had,” she said.

“All I have wanted to do is to get this gold medal for Great Britain. I wasn’t expecting to knock her down and I was quite shocked that I did but I felt then that I had it in the bag.

“It is still all sinking in, I can’t believe what I have achieved. It’s definitely a childhood dream come true.”
