Julie Bresset of France in her first Olympics, rode a commanding race at Hadleigh Farm, taking the lead after two laps before breaking away to lead for over an hour. Team GB’s Annie last finished eighth. The 23 year old French woman was not the favourie before the race, but a medal never looked in doubt by the mid-way point. Bresset finished a minute ahead of the field in a time of 1:30:52. Sabine spitz of Germany took the silver, with Georgia Gould from USA taking the bronze.
Annie Last of Great Britain showed early promise for a medal by leading for the first lap, but paid the price, dropping back as the race went on. But she held form and finished in a very creditable 8th just three minutes behind Bresset.
After the race Last told the BBC: “I am really, really happy, There is so much to think about out there, but it’s just about focussing on your own race.”
Of the home crowd support she said: “Its amazing here and to have so much support has been fantastic”
