Sailing: Mixed fortunes for Team GB girls

There were mixed fortunes for female British sailing crews, with one still on course for medals and the other missing out at the quarter final stage in Weymouth and Portland.

In the Women’s 470 class the duo of Saskia Clark and Hannah Mills went into today’s races in second place behind New Zealand before races nine and ten.

In race nine the girls finished in eighth position, their worst result of the competition, causing them to lose more ground on the leaders.

Race ten saw a much better performance from the crew resulting in them crossing the line second where as the leaders, New Zealand, only managed 18th.

These results mean that going into the medal race on Friday the British and New Zealand crews are equal on points guaranteeing a medal for TeamGB.

And for Sportsister cover star, Hannah Mills, who is making her Olympic debut, it has been a rollercoaster ride:

“We have had a really good week. Some things have not gone our way but it is swings and roundabouts and we are now level points.”

There was no such success for the Women’s Elliot 6m crew who were beaten at the quarter final stage in a tense match with Russia that went to a deciding race.

The first to three contest saw it go to fifth and final race in which the Russian crew won.

The British crew of Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor lost the first race, took the second and third with the Russians taking the last two.

The team will now go into the sail off for fifth to eighth position on Friday.
