Cycling: Trott enters final event of omnium two points down

August 7, 2012

British track cyclist Laura Trott enters the final event of the two-day women’s omnium event this afternoon two points behind her main opponent Sarah Hammer of the USA.

After five events, Hammer leads on 15 points, while Trott has 17. Australian Annete Edmundson is currently in third position, following her win in the scratch race but with five points between her and Trott, all eyes are on the top two.

Overnight leader Trott came second to Hammer in the 3km individual pursuit round this morning before finishing third behind Edmundson and Hammer in the scratch race.  However the Essex-born athlete is expected to win the sixth and final event, the 500m time trial.

Time will only tell if competing in front of a home crowd will give Trott the extra edge over her American opponent.

In addition to Trott’s event, Olympic legend Sir Chris Hoy is also contending for gold today in the men’s keirin while gold medallist Victoria Pendleton hopes to secure the top spot on the podium once again, as she competes in the women’s sprint.
