Women’s Laser Radial sailor Alison Young just missed out on a podium spot earlier today, despite a strong performance in the medal race.

A fourth place finish in that race meant the 25-year-old was unable to cap an impressive Olympic debut, finishing a respectable fifth overall.
Gold went to China’s Xu Lijia who dominated the 11 rounds, sealing her success by winning today’s medal race. Holland’s Marit Bouwmeester clinched silver, whilst Evi Van Acker of Belgium bagged bronze.
Although disappointed to have missed out on a medal, Young was grateful for the experience competing in a home Games had provided.
“It has been a great experience to take forward,” she said, and went on to confirm that Rio 2016 is definitely in her sights.
But her plans for the immediate future were to “Stay here and enjoy ourselves, maybe go to the Nothe to watch some of the racing.”
Ireland’s Annalise Murphy was also disappointed with her end result, with the 22-year-old narrowly missing out on the chance to win Ireland’s first medal of the Games.
Her fifth place finish this afternoon left her fourth overall.
