Great Britain’s women’s basketball team lost their final Olympic group match to Brazil 78-66 last night.

Both teams had already been eliminated from the quarterfinals but it was a consolation victory for Brazil, who until yesterday had failed to win a match.

Sadly, Britain’s women exit the competition without a single victory. Following their exit, GB’s Julie Page (pictured above) commented:

“Each one of us is very competitive so to finish the tournament without a win is very disappointing. We can be proud of how we played on the court. We competed with the best teams in the world.”

Great Britain and Brazil traded the lead four times in a tight first half but Brazil’s Adriana Pinto keyed a 7-3 run that put her side 39-36 ahead at half-time.

The Brazilians never trailed again as their speed in transition paid dividends as repeated fast breaks were converted into scores, with thanks to Clarissa Santos and Erika Souza who both scored 16 points each.

Souza capped a 10-0 run at the start of the third period and steadily Britain were left behind as their deficit steadily grew to as much as 70-55 with 4:54 left. Pinto finished with 15 points and 12 assists.

Team GB’s Natalie Stafford (pictured above) had a team-high 15 points and 11 rebounds for Britain.
