Swimming: Fran Halsall narrowly misses a medal

Team GB’s Fran Halsall finished fifth in the women’s 50m freestyle final at the Aquatics Centre this evening in a time of 24.47 seconds.

Dutch swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo set a new Olympic record of 24.05 seconds on her way to Gold, while Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus took silver, and another Dutch swimmer, Marleen Veldhuis, finished third.

“All I can say is that the crowd have been amazing, the support I’ve had has been incredible, but unfortunately my performance here hasn’t been incredible,” said Halsall.

The women’s 4x100m medley relay team of Halsall, Gemma Spofforth, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor and Ellen Gandy finished eighth in their final, which saw the United States clinch Gold in a new world record time of 3 minutes 52.05 seconds.

“To be honest I am slightly disappointed with my performance and I would have hoped to have done a lot better but I can only learn from these experiences,” said Gandy, 20.

“Sometimes you learn more from the bad experiences than you do from the good so I’ll try and take the positives from this and move on.”

And in the final swimming event of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the men’s 4x100m medley relay team of Liam Tancock, Michael Jamieson, Michael Rock and Adam Brown narrowly missed out on a medal when they finished fourth in a time of 3 minutes 32.32 seconds.
