Olympic blog: A chance for other sports to shine

The thing I love about the Olympics is that it really is a chance to shine the spotlight on a load of sports that don’t usually get a look in. And this Olympics is better than ever – with the arrival of digital coverage we can now watch literally any sport we want and not have to rely on the broadcasters choice.

But it’s not just the Olympic sports that get their moment, over at the Canoe slalom a group of intrepid freestyle canoeists entertained the crowd with their skills.

According to paddler Claire O’Hara “Freestyle kayaking has been developing and growing massively as a sport over the last 10 years and now has it’s own World Championships. Its popularity amongst the younger generation is huge to with kids as young as 8 competing in events across the world.”

Although Freestyle kayaking is not a competitive Olympic discipline yet, being invited along to entertain the crowds has been a unique opportinity to showcase another exciting discipline within paddle sport. And hopefully inspire a generation to take up a sport, whether it’s an Olympic discipline or not.
