Athletics: Strong start for Brits in track and field

On the first morning of competition in the athletics stadium, Team GB’s women got off to a great start.

In the women’s 400m all three Brits have made it through to the semi finals with solid runs in the heats. Defending Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu looked very comfortable as she ran 50.80 to qualify as fourth fastest. She will be joined by Shana Cox who ran 52.01 and Lee McConnell 52.23.

Yamile Aldama, the world indoor triple jump champion, eased through qualification jumping 14.45m on her first jump. Only two athletes, Olga Rypakova (Kazakhstan) and Kimberley Williams (USA) jumped further in qualifying. She will now compete in Sunday’s final.

Feeling the support of the home crowd she said,
“It’s my fifth Olympic Games. I’ve never experienced a crowd like this. I don’t mean they’ve been empty before, but not like this.”
