Swimming: Halsall close, but misses out on an Olympic medal

Fran Halsall finished just 0.22 seconds outside the medals in sixth place in the women’s 100-metre Backstroke at the Olympic Aquatics Centre on Thursday.

22-year-old Southport-born Halsall, who now lives in Loughborough, started strongly in lane seven and looked to be in contention for Bronze at the turn. But she could not find that last burst of speed to force her into the top three.

Halsall, who will now compete in the women’s 50-metre Freestyle, said: “I just didn’t have it today. I can’t change it now unfortunately; I gave it my best shot. But the time just wasn’t there. I’m looking forward to the 50 metres, I feel a lot better at that at the moment.”

Lizzie Simmonds forced her way into the women’s 200-metre Backstroke final tomorrow after finishing fifth in her semi-final in 2:08.24, progressing as one of the fastest losers. That race takes place at 19.30 tommorrow (friday)
