Judo: Gemma Gibbons historic march into final boosts Team GB

Team GB’s Gemma Gibbons sent the crowd into raptures as she stunned France’s world champion Audrey Tcheumeo to reach the Olympic final at the ExCel Arena earlier today.

The 25-year-old from Greenwich threw Tcheumeo with a harai-goshi in golden score to dramatically seal Britain’s first Olympic final since 2000 and ensure she would win at least a silver medal – Team GB’s first Olympic judo medal for 12 years.

World number 42 Gibbons, who only moved up to the -78kg weight category in May, will now face 2010 world champion Kayla Harrison from America in the Olympic final.

Clearly shocked by her success, after the fight Gibbons said: “It doesn’t feel like it’s real.”
