Here are some of the highlights for Team GB from the first full day of action at the London 2012 Olympics.
Rowing
Team GB’s Helen Glover and Heather Stanning got Great Britain off to a stunning start on the first full morning of competition by qualifying for the pair’s final in an Olympic record time.
They comfortably held off the challenge from the United States to win in 6 min 57.29 breaking the mark set by Australia in 1996. They now take their place in Wednesday’s final at Eton Dorney.
Swimming
Hannah Miley finished fifth in the 400m Individual Medley, and although she had been tipped for a possible podium finish she will now concentrate on the 200m medley. Britain also finished fifth in the final of the 4x100m freestyle relay. Whilst Ellen Gandy has progressed to tomorrow’s 100m butterfly final.
Fencing
Natalia Sheppard beat her GB teammate Sophie Troiano in the individual foil in the round of 64 stage.
Badminton
Susan Egelstaff produced a confident display this afternoon to defeat Slovenia’s Maja Tvrdy in straight games and claim Team GB’s first win of the Olympic badminton tournament.
It was not such a great start in the mixed doubles with an unexpected defeat for Chris Adcock and Imogen Bankier in their opening game at Wembley Arena this morning.
Football
Another great performance by Team GB women saw them beat Cameroon 3-0. This puts them in a great position having played two matches and won two matches with no goals conceded and they are now guaranteed to make the quarter finals.
Tennis
Elena Baltacha marked her Olympic debut with a straight sets victory over Hungary’s Agnes Szavay in the first day of the tennis competition at Wimbledon today.
Equestrian
Team GB eventers unofficially lie in third place after the first day of the dressage phase at Greenwich Park. Nicola Wilson led the team off to a great start with a solid test to finish day one in =16th place. Mary King followed up, producing her best ever score at four star level with Imperial Cavalier to end the day ranked third individually. Team mates Zara Phillips, Tina Cook and world number one William Fox-Pitt complete their dressage tests tomorrow.
Table tennis
English National Champion Joanna Parker had the perfect start, taking a decisive victory against Brazilian Caroline Kumahara 4-0 in a contest that lasted exactly 30 minutes.
