As we gather around the TV to watch the summer of sport that is upon us, the lean athletes we see on the track and pitch will not be motivating us into changing our bad eating habits, if a new study by Wonderful Pistachios is to be believed.
According to the report, we are most likely to be grazing on unhealthy snacks when we tune in to follow sport on TV, with our top three favourite snacks being crisps, chocolate and biscuits. Only 17 per cent of respondents choose to snack on healthy fruit.
Similarly, we tend to comfort eat when the sports team we are following on TV is losing, with respondents admitting that they are almost twice as likely to snack on something unhealthy rather than take the healthy option when their team is doing badly.
But at least our generation is not alone – interestingly our snack of choice has not changed much over the last 30 years, as back in the 1960s and 1970s 51 per cent of us were tucking into crisps as we sat down to watch sport.
