Olympic blog: Dining out

July 20, 2012
Dining-Hall

One of my favourite areas in the Olympic Village was the vast dining hall. I was totally amazed by the sheer scale and variety of food on offer. It’s so big that could fit 880 double decker buses inside!

The 24 hour dining facility has 5,000 seats and they are expecting to serve 1.2 million meals. Athletes can choose from 1300 different type of dishes, and with more than 200 teams coming from different countries around the world the variety is huge.

They are expecting to get through 25,000 loaves of bread, 232 tonnes of potatoes, 75,000 litres of milk and more than 330 tonnes of fruit and vegetables including a whopping 2.7 million bananas.

It’s been well publicised that McDonalds, one of the Games’ principal sponsors, has a big presence in the Olympic Park – in fact the largest McDonalds in the world is here with 15,000 seats! And there is even a McDonalds in the Olympic Village for the athlete’s to tuck into (for free) if they choose. Most say they will be waiting until after they have finished competing!
