Heather Watson is now the highest-ranked British female tennis player after she rose to number 71 in the new WTA list, which was announced yesterday.

The 20-year-old, along with her partner Marina Erakovic won the Bank of West Classic doubles at the weekend, after they beat Vania King and Jarmila Gajdosova 7-5 7-6 (9/7).

Watson is joined in the top 100 by Anne Keothavong at number 76, Laura Robson at 91 and Elena Baltacha (100). All four women have also been selected for the 2012 Games.

This is the first time that four female players have been placed in the top 100 in over 20 years. The last four women to appear in the rankings were Jo Durie (62) , Sara Gomer (89), Sarah Loosemore (93) and Monique Javer (100) back in 1991.

This week, Watson and Keothavong are competing at the Mercury Insurance Open in California, while Robson takes part in the Sony Swedish Open.
