Surfing: Gilmore gains 5th ASP title

Stephanie Gilmore claimed her 5th ASP Women’s World Title on Saturday, after winning the Roxy Pro Biarritz at Grande Plage, France.

The 24-year-old beat fellow Australian Tyler Wright in the final and consequently now joins American Kelly Slater and Australian Layne Beachley as the only surfers in history to have won five or more ASP world titles.

Gilmore (pictured above) previously set an ASP record, after becoming the first surfer to win four titles from four attempts, between 2007 and 2010 but in 2011 she fell back down to ASP Women’s World No. 3.

Speaking after her victory on Saturday, she said: “This year for me was all about improving my consistency and having fun with my surfing. From when I started five years ago to where we are now, women’s surfing has improved so much. It’s an honour to be back up top as these girls push me every day and are all incredible surfers.”

Wright’s runner up finish moves her up from 5th to 3rd on the elite ASP Women’s World Championship Tour rankings.

She appeared happy with her performance in Saturday’s event, commenting:  “I’m just enjoying myself! I feel it’s funner when I just messing around rather than be too serious. You know I love surfing and that’s about it.”
