It’s a jungle out there, so try an urban bootcamp

At Sportsister we’re forever hearing about the latest fitness crazes and the newest ways to work out, but every now and then something comes along that really grabs our attention.

Cue UVU Jungle Warrior sessions. The brainchild of performance wear brand UVU, these sessions target running enthusiasts in London and New York City – those who want to conquer the urban jungle. But what does that actually mean?

To explain, it might be easier to start at the end and work backwards. It’s all in anticipation of UVU’s Jungle Marathon in the Amazonian Jungles of Brazil this October. The Jungle Warrior sessions are preparation for that, with the aim of turning ‘ordinary running enthusiasts’ into ‘tough and uncompromising Amazonian endurance racers’. Grr!

The sessions have a very underground feel, full of mystery. Covert groups of up to 15 people will discover the route for the training runs up to just 48 hours prior to start time and each session will be spearheaded by a UVU brand athlete and elite coach to push you both mentally and physically.

You’ll need to embrace a guerrilla ethos of ‘survival at any cost’, similar to what you’d expect from the environmental rigours of the Amazon. Park benches, trees and railings will be your training equipment and routes will deviate from regular and well-worn casual jogging tails into more undiscovered territory.

‘But what’s in it for me?’ you might ask. Well, other than an improved state of fitness, there’s an all expenses paid trip to the Amazon in October with a spot in the UVU Jungle Marathon up for grabs for select participants that demonstrate the greatest improvement as judged by UVU’s elite coaches. This six stage, 222km, seven-day adventure is the world’s most dangerous race, and will call upon all the training provided in the UVU Jungle Warrior sessions.

Think you’re hard enough? Sessions take place from mid-July and conclude in September, just in time for the start of the Jungle Marathon. Email junglelondon@uvu-performance.com for more info.
