Basketball: GB lose to Croatia again in second pre-Olympic warm-up

The Standard Life GB women’s team sustained a narrow 77-74 defeat to Croatia in Vodice on Tuesday night in their second pre-Olympic tune-up.

After losing 81-59 to the same opponents 24 hours earlier, it was a much-improved showing from Tom Maher’s side against one of Europe’s strongest nations, who had to come from behind in the fourth quarter to snatch victory.

The visitors, eventually led by 14 points from Azania Stewart, trailed 48-37 late in the second period before ending the half with a 6-0 run.

And Britain’s rally continued as they went as much as eight ahead early in the final period.

However a 7-2 closing burst from the hosts thwarted their brave challenge as a last second three-point attempt from Natalie Stafford fell short.

But, Stewart declared, there were positive signs to take forward.

“We wanted to concentrate more on the things we didn’t do yesterday, so that was communication and working on our defence,” said the London-born centre.

“As a team we did really well. We’re just making strides forward.”

Belgium is the next destination for the side with a four-nation tournament this weekend that tips off with GB facing Ukraine on Friday.

“Our upcoming games, for me are just about focusing on the little things and not thinking about too much,” Stewart added.

Jo Leedham and Temi Fegbenle notched up 13 points apiece along with five and four rebounds respectively, while Natalie Stafford recorded 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Stef Collins pulled down a team high nine rebounds and Julie Page sunk ten points and eight rebound.

Ana Lelas had a game-high 15 points for Croatia.
