Swimming: Allen storms to silver in Hungary

Sophie Allen claimed her first major international medal for the GBR Swimming Team yesterday, making it two silvers in 24 hours for Great Britain at the European Championships in Hungary.

The 20-year-old put on a strong performance in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley  in Debrecen to secure second place.

The Stockport swimmer broke her own English Record to touch in 2:11.49, with Katinka Hosszu of Hungary taking the gold in 2:10.84.

Allen, who is to make her Olympic debut in London later this year, had qualified for the final fifth fastest. She was fifth at the halfway point in the final, but pulled it back to secure a medal.

Her backstroke leg, the quickest in the field, pushed her to second with 50m remaining. A strong final freestyle leg was enough to clinch her the silver behind Hosszu, who claimed her second medley title of the week after victory over 400m.
