Tennis: Heather Watson launches AEGON Classic
Britain’s number 3 tennis player Heather Watson, launched the 2012 AEGON Classic today. It will take place on 11-17 June at Edgbaston Priory club in Birmingham.
Ladies Day is the latest addition to the event, as well as students’ day on the 11 June and kids day on the 10 June, where kids go free.
Kids’ day is a great opportunity for families to come and see world class players in action, as well as a special exhibition match that is being planned for Centre Court.
On Ladies day one lucky lady will be the winner of the bespoke ring, designed by Vault 88, showcased by Heather.
Heather competed at the tournament for the first time last year, missing out on a quarter-final spot, she’s looking forward to her return to the AEGON Classic: “I’m really excited to be back playing in Birmingham this year. The tournament has such a friendly feel to it and it was great to get some grass-court practice in before Wimbledon.
“I love the idea of having a Ladies Day at the event. It will be fun to see everyone coming to watch the tennis dressed up and think it will create a really good atmosphere.”
The British star practised with some of the Club’s local players from the junior and community programme.
The Lawn Tennis Association is investing £5m into a £12m development of Edgbaston Priory Club to help strengthen the grass court tournaments in the build up to The Championships, Wimbledon. The investment will secure the future of grass court tennis in the Midlands and provide a world class environment for the development of the high performance programme.
Roger Draper, Chief Executive of the LTA, said, “We are fortunate in this country to be able to put on world class tennis events like the AEGON Classic, as part of our work to grow British tennis, and it’s really exciting to see Edgbaston Priory Club already transformed as the redevelopment takes shape.”
Robert Bray, Chief Executive at the Edgbaston Priory Club, said “The new facilities will secure Edgbaston Priory Club’s position as a prominent international tournament venue for racquet sport, attracting world class tennis players to Birmingham and bringing with it vital business to the local economy.
