Badminton: Great Britain’s Robertson and Wallwork knock out Adock and Bankier
Great Britain pair Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork came from behind to beat Chris Adcock and Imogen Bankier in the first round of the mixed doubles at the Maybank Malaysian Open.
Adcock and Bankier, World silver medallists, won the opening game 21-14, before Robertson and Wallwork, Commonwealth silver medallists, hit back 21-17 and 21-8 in the decider.
The match was evenly contested with both pairs at the top of their game, but Robertson and Wallwork pulled away when the game was level at 13-13 to give their Olympic chances a boost.
Adcock and Bankier led 3-1 in the final match but Robertson and Wallwork fought back to win 21-8 in the first meeting between the Great Britain pairs.
Robertson and Wallwork, ranked No 23 in the world will face Indonesian pair Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Yu Yan Vanessa Yeom ranked 31, in tomorrow’s second round.
World No 18, Robert Blair and Gabby White face Indonesian pair Tontowi Ahmas and Liliyana Natsir, later today.
Wallwork was in action again in the women’s doubles with White, the Leeds duo, promoted from qualifying were defeated by Korean pair Ha Jung Eun and Kim Min Jung 21-9 and 21-18.
Rajiv Ouseph competes against Chinese No 3 Long Chen in the men’s singles and in the men’s doubles Adock and Andrew Ellis face Chinese No 3 pair Biao Chai and Guo Zhendong.
