Marathon blog: Getting quite literally back on track

Recently I’ve been finding it hard to get into a routine with my training.

Having been poorly and having a few weeks off from work, my body clock has gone completely out of sync. I have also been spending a lot of time away with friends and family over Christmas and this has made it difficult to keep up the regular running.

I have been trying to fit in runs when and where I can – even dragging my Dad out for an eight mile run on his birthday (sorry Dad!) But inevitably over this holiday season, my training hasn’t been particularly brilliant. Not good.

There have however been some positives; Christmas has been perfect for getting me kitted out ready to get back to it in the New Year.

I was given numerous reflective pink, blue and yellow running tops, lightweight gilets and jogging bottoms as well as some super running gloves with an inbuilt key pocket and the thumb is not only reflective, but also the same material as a sweat band. My very unsubtle hints of how brilliant the New Balance running top was definitely didn’t go unnoticed! I’ve never run wearing gloves before so I’ll let you know how I get on.

I also got sent through this week the Virgin London Marathon magazine which includes various training plans and advice on nutrition, injury prevention and clothing.

The Commonwealth Games Bronze medallist Liz Yelling has written an article sharing her invaluable advice on preparing for a marathon and reminds me that there is no magic potion or quick fix to the finish line – it takes months of consistent walking, jogging and running with a lot of patience, commitment, persistence and above all dogged determination.

It is definitely the kick I need to get me back in running shape this New Year; I can’t wait to get back in to my old routine!

Happy New Year everybody!
