Considered one of the most successful disabled athletes in the UK, sixteen-time Paralympics medalist Dame Tanni-Grey Thompson has been named as the new President for Sports Leaders UK.
Sports Leaders UK is a charity that recognises and awards the extraordinary work that young people in their local communities do through sport. By offering them awards and qualifications to become a sports leader, the charity offers youngsters motivation, discipline and invaluable skills in providing them an opportunity to fulfill their potential as leaders. For many it gives them a sense of self-worth, achievement and empowerment that they have not yet experienced.
The awards and qualifications are gained through schools, colleges and university where it has been proven that such courses have improved the behaviour and attendance of younger people, and with the ambition of reaching out to those who are not so mainstream, the qualifications are also available to those in prison, youth offenders institutions and local community centres.
Having received an MBE and OBE for her services to sport, Dame Tanni-Grey Thompson will no doubt provide further inspiration and motivation to those who are a part of Sports Leaders UK now and in the future.
