Taekwondo: Jade Jones caps gold tournament for GB

October 3, 2011

Jade Jones capped a memorable night at the British International Open in Manchester yesterday. She joined Bianca Walkden and Martin Stamper as British Open gold medallists.

The 18-year-old World Championship silver medallist came from 4-0 down in the opening round to beat French rival Marlene Harnois 10-8 in the final of the -57kg weight division.

It completed a memorable hour for the Manchester based GB squad after Walkden’s success in the +73 kg category and Martin Stamper’s gold at -68kg.

“I expected a tough fight because I beat her at the Worlds and I knew she wanted to beat me so bad,” said Flint teenager Jones.

“I don’t know what happened at the start; maybe I wasn’t switched on.

“But it all came right and it’s amazing to win my first British Open title.”

In contrast, Liverpudlian Walkden has now won four British titles but needed a golden point to edge out German rival, Katharina Weiss.

Former world number two Walkden is now back to her best after a serious knee injury wrecked her chances at the World Championships last May.

She is still coming to terms with the knowledge that her weight isn’t one of four selected for next year’s Olympics.

“The injury was a nightmare-the worst thing that could possibly happen,” said the recent double Polish Open champion.

“But I’m not going to give up, even if there is one percent chance of making the Olympics.”

World bronze medallist Martin Stamper collected Britain’s third gold.
