Rugby League: Co-operative Rugby League Conference Women’s Final Day sees Warrington lift the Championship trophy

August 23, 2011

Warrington Wolves secured a dominant victory over Halton Hillside Hawks in Saturday’s Co-operative Rugby League Conference Women’s Championship Final Day – thrashing the Lancashire side 44-8.

Boasting a team consisting of six England internationals – Warrington opened the scoring early on after Holly Freestone slipped through the battling Halton side’s defence.

This was followed a minute later by a score from Amanda Donaldson.

Moving 12 points clear – Jen Welsby cleanly converted two from two for Wolves.

But it was not all plain sailing, after a Warrington error saw Gemma Stanley sprint over the line to put her team on the score board.

Just before half time Clare Robinson managed to re-extend Warrington’s lead after an impressive sprint saw her successfully land a try, leaving the score 16-4 at the break.

The second half didn’t see much improvement for Halton, Warrington scoring after just five minutes with a Welsby try and conversion to match.

Further scores from internationals Katie Williams, Danny Bound, Emily Rudge and Jodie Cunningham ensured Warrington would lift the Championship Trophy.

Just before time, Jessica Potter scored Halton a consolation try – but it was not enough to stop Warrington lifting the Championship Trophy.
