The best kind of active recovery!
Completing my first ever half marathon, with an inadequate amount of training, left me walking like a penguin with pretty sore hips, quads, hamstrings and calves. You name it, if it’s a tendon, ligament, joint or muscle in my legs – it was sore.
With my pre-season hockey training just around the corner, and more long drives to conclude the rest of my holiday road trip, I needed to get my muscles moving and loosen them up. Nothing too strenuous was necessary, as my muscles were still repairing from the race. They simply required some gentle stretching and mobility to ease the stiffness; and what better way to do this than incorporating a bit of sight-seeing in as well.
Three days after my half marathon, I reached the Grand Canyon in Arizona with some friends. We decided to spend the day cycling around the rim of the canyon to reach as many view points as possible. The idea at first made the lower half of my body wince with anticipated pain. However, once the initial stiffness was overcome it really did help and proved one of the best ways to see what the Grand Canyon has to offer!

Cycling around the Grand Canyon
We cycled for six hours around the rim of the canyon. It was an awe-inspiring experience and a quick and easy way to access all the best view points. The cycling really helped my legs recover, along with a nice hot bath at the end of the day, which soon had me walking (almost) normally again!
