Badminton: Cann off to a winning start at Yonex BWF World Championships

As 2011’s Yonex BWF World Badminton Championships got under way yesterday, England posted a mixed bag of results.

Commonwealth bronze medalist Elizabeth Cann and young women’s doubles pair Alex Langley and Lauren Smith were among the winners as top-class badminton returned to Wembley Arena for the first time since 1993.

The doubles pair won their opening contest with impressive results, 21-9 21-15, against Spain’s Noelia Jiminez and Paula Rodriguez and will play 11th seeds Poon Lock Yan and Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong on Wednesday.

Cann beat Michelle Chan Ky of New Zealand 16-21 21-13 21-11 and will play 10th seed Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, from Thailand, tomorrow afternoon.

Cann said: “I played her last year at the French Open and she won so it’s my turn this time. I’m pleased with today’s effort and looking forward to going again tomorrow.”

She said about her first win: “It was a bit of a rocky start, I was shaking the nerves out. I was a bit loose at the beginning but as I got into the second game I got into my stride.”

Sarah Walker, England’s other women’s singles hope faced tough opposition in the form of previous world No. 4, Pi Hongyan yesterday, and unfortunately lost her first round contest.

Despite defeat Walker was pleased with her game and thrilled to play in the London 2012 venue, she said: “It was great to play here. I’m just going to continue to work to build up the pace.”

Performance director Jens Grill said: “Sarah has been working well recently and we are now looking forward to her making progress in the tournament programme we have planned for her.”

But their was disappointment in the women’s doubles as Jenny Wallwork and Gabby White lost 21-14 21-12 to Malaysians Eei Hui Chin and Wong Pei Tty but Wallwork will take to the court again tomorrow night in the mixed doubles with Nathan Robertson.

Mariana Agathangelou and Heather Olver won their first game against Tsz Ka Chan and Hoi Wah Chau but the Hong Kong pair unfortunately hit back to win 17-21 21-12 21-15.
