Tennis: Both Baltacha and Watson fall at final hurdle

Two of Britain’s leading tennis players, Heather Watson and Elena Baltacha, have suffered defeats in the final round of qualifying at Toronto’s Rogers Cup.

Women's TennisBaltacha, Britain’s number one and ranked 60 in the world, looked strong in her first round match against Aravane Rezai of France, winning in straight sets. But she was beaten 7-6(5) 6-3 by Hungarian opponent Greta Arn yesterday.

Baltacha was ranked 11 places above Arn and the defeat makes it four losses out of four against the player.

Heather Watson, Britain’s number three, was one set up against Slovenia’s Polona Hercog but was eventually beaten 2-6 6-3 6-2.

Fellow Brit Anne Keothavong was knocked out in the first round of qualifying meaning that there will be British representative in the main draw. The event has attracted all of the top 20 ranked players as they look to prepare for this month’s US Open.
