Tennis: Britain’s number one storms to second round of Mercury Insurance Open

August 2, 2011

Britain’s number one tennis player Elena Baltacha has progressed to the second round of the Mercury Insurance Open in Carlsbad.

Elena-BaltachaBaltacha lost just one game to secure victory over former World Number 23, Melanie Oudin of the USA. With a win of 6-0, 6-1, at the WTA Premier event, held near San Diego, the Brit will play third seed Agnieszka Radwanska next.

The World number 60 said: “I’m absolutely delighted with that win. It’s certainly one of the best performances I’ve had at a WTA Premier event, because the opposition is always really strong at these tournaments.

“I played a very solid match from the first point to the last and to do that at this level is a big encouragement for me. This is a match I want to build on because every match I play is great preparation for the US Open, which starts at the end of this month.”

Baltacha, who has won ten ITF titles throughout her career and currently coached by Nino Severino, said she is looking forward to playing Radwanska and likes taking on the top players.

She said: “I played her once before, at the French Open a couple of years ago, and played pretty well against her. I’ll have lots of confidence and I’ll feel like I have nothing to lose because she’s expected to win.”
