Cycling: Nicole Cooke wins stage 5 of Giro Donne

July 6, 2011

On the longest day of this 10 day race, Olympic champion Nicole Cooke, riding for MCipollini Giordana team, secured her first win of 2011 as she crossed the line in Verona first to win stage 5.

Overall race leader Marianne Vos finished just seconds behind Cooke, and remains 18 minutes ahead of Cooke in the overall standings.

Even so it was a much celebrated win for the Welsh rider who has struggled to find the form that saw her previously crowned Olympic and world champion. This was her first win since June 2010 when she won a stage of the Emakumeen Bira in Spain’s Basque region.

In the final stages of the 129km race from Altedo to Verona a large crash involving several riders resulted in the end of British rider Lucy Martin’s race as she suffered a broken wrist.

Fellow Brit Sharon Laws, riding for Garmin Cervelo, finished eighth. She currently sits fifth in the overall standings, two spots behind her team mate Emma Pooley.
