Cricket: England women’s unbeaten run comes to an end

England women suffered a disappointing seven wickets defeat to Australia women in the third ODI of the NatWest Women’s Quadrangular Series at Lord’s yesterday.

England were looking to continue their unbeaten run in the series but it was not to be as Australia had the upper hand on a worn pitch and ran out comfortable winners.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, the hosts slumped to 26 for four after 12 overs and had to rely on Lydia Greenway to rebuild the innings.

Greenway partnered Sarah Taylor and Arran Brindle to steady the ship adding 34 runs before she was caught by Shelly Nitschke attempting a reverse sweep.

But runs were hard to come by and it was left to the lower order to bat out the innings with Holly Colvin (29) and Danielle Hazell (19) bolstering the score to a modest 168 for England.

In reply, Meg Lanning and Shelly Nitschke then got Australia off to a flying start of with a 54 run partnership which was finally broken when Lanning was caught by Brindle off Colvin.

Nitschke and Player of the Match Alex Blackwell then shared a 94 run partnership which effectively settled the match and only ended when the Australian opener was run out for 53 with 16 runs still required. But there were to be no further breakthroughs for England and Cameron and Blackwell took Australia to their victory target with ease.

Charlotte Edwards said: “It was a disappointing performance today. We didn’t get the runs on the board.

“We knew we would have to take early wickets to give ourselves any chance of defending 168, especially at Lord’s.

“It wasn’t to be today but we’ll put this down to a bad day at the office and move on. We have another chance against Australia at Wormsley and will take all our positives from previous performances in the series into the final on Thursday.”

The final of the NatWest Women’s Quadrangular Series will be a rematch between England and Australia at Wormsley Cricket Ground on Thursday.

In the other game of the NatWest Women’s Quadrangular Series, New Zealand beat India by 39 at Southgate Cricket Club today.
