When: September 4, 2024
Where: Stoke Newington West Reservoir, London
Details: This charity event organised by the WWF is to raise awareness of the seas that surround Britain.
The UK has 20,000km of coastline containing diverse marine life and habitats, from deep sea corals to dolphins, so it’s a worrying fact that just two per cent of Britain’s seas are protected. This figure falls to only one per cent for global oceans despite them covering 71 per cent of our planet’s surface.
The world’s rivers, aquifers and wetlands are also under increasing pressure due to over-use, pollution and the effects of climate change. WWF’s Blue Mile is an opportunity to enjoy our amazing seas, rivers, lakes and waterways whilst doing something unique to help preserve them.
The flagship event in London will see people swimming one mile along the reservoir but WWF are encouraging everyone all over the country to organise their own ‘Blue Mile’ event. You can swim, splash, kayak, float or paddle across one mile of water near you to raise money for their worthy cause. You can do it indoors or outdoors and if swimming isn’t your thing, simply walk along the edge of the water and discover the 20,000km of coastline that our country has to offer.
