Tennis: Baltacha knocked out by Vania King

May 26, 2011

The British number one let a one set lead slip to go out in the second round of the French Open to Vania King, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Elena-BaltachaAfter winning four games in a row early on in the first set it hopes were raised that the 27 year old Scottish player could become the first British woman since 1992 to reach round three of the French Open. But it was not to be.

American King took command of the second set taking a 5-0 lead and whilst Baltacha did manage to hold her serve, King was never going to let that lead slip away.

Again in the third King took control winning the first three games and despite resilient play from Baltacha she was unable to notch up the games.

Afterwards she said, “I knew that going into the match that it was going to be very difficult. She’s got a good game on clay and she’s playing very well. I was able to dominate in the first set, then maybe went a bit flat in the second and in the third. Even though I was more aggressive, she was just absorbing my pace and I wasn’t really able to get her out of court. That’s really the big reason why I lost the match today.

“I’m not beating myself up. There are a lot of positives and I can go away from here proud of what I’ve done. I’ve learned a lot, I’ve picked up a lot of points and I’m going into the grass ready to really enjoy it and try and make the most of it.”

Baltacha will now focus on the looming grass court season where she is expected to compete at both Eastbourne and Wimbledon. Fellow Brit Heather Watson will face Estonian 16th seed Kaia Kanepi later today.
