What do you think about when you are exercising?
A straw poll round the Sportsister office revealed some very different answers to this question. For some it’s all about counting down the miles, just needing to reach the next lamp post/corner/bridge.
For others it’s dicatated by the music they are listening too, perhaps its songs that remind them of parties or festivals and can make them forget about the tired legs and remember the fun times. Whilst others use it as time for blue sky thinking, an opportunity to have a clear head and no distractions.
But according to a new survey by Shock Absorber the most common thoughts are not about music, miles or eureka moments but they are about your other half. Nearly a fifth of women in the UK said they think about the state of their relationship while working out.

With most women leading hectic lifestyles, taking time out to exercise provides that all-important thinking time to make key decisions about their partners such as whether their other half is ‘the one’.
Shock Absorber spokesperson, Kirsty Kothakota said: “Most women really value the ‘me time’ that exercising gives them. When you’re working out, not only are you getting the physical benefits but mentally you have the time and space to consider those all important life decisions.”
The research into women’s attitudes to exercise also revealed that 40% think about how to make positive life changes with 20% making decisions about their careers.
Simon Elkinson, Strength and Conditioning Coach at Surrey Storm netball said: “Focussing your mind on something when exercising can help you move forward in your life. As you push yourself physically the endorphins that are released not only increase happiness, but give you the confidence to make major life changes.”
From the women questioned, 34% focus on how to improve their health, whether it is to quit smoking, cut down on alcohol or to change diets.
