Gymnastics: Beth Tweddle wins third consecutive title

Beth Tweddle won her third consecutive bars title at the 2011 Gymnastics European Championships in Berlin after scoring 15.100 for her routine.

Having won the title in Milan in 2009 and Birmingham in 2010, Tweddle once again put her name in the gymnastic history books producing high scoring, stunning performances.

Throughout her performance on the bars Tweddle was calm and composed. She knew that only major errors could deny her the title with Romania’s Tatiana Nabieva setting the bar at 15.075. Tweddle had done it, there there were no major errors, in her score of 15.100, below her very best but easily enough to take the Gold.

Of the win Tweddle said: “I am really happy that I have put my new routine out there and come away with the Gold medal.”

However, Tweddle missed out on a second medal in Berlin after finishing fourth in the floor final scoring 14.300 in the routine which was hindered by a minor calf injury. She was defending her second European title after narrowly beating Nabieva in uneven bars.

It didn’t come as a loss to Tweddle who was unsure she would be able to defend her gold in the floors. She said before the competition: “As for floor tomorrow – I have been suffering a bit with injury so I don’t think we can expect miracles but who knows!”

Twedde who won her first European medal nine years ago, has not lost in an individual European final in the bars or floor since 2008 but was beaten to gold in the floors by Romania’s Sandra Izbasa beat her to gold who scored 14.500.
