UK Sport announce World Class Events Programme for 2011

February 22, 2011

UK Sport has released an impressive and extensive events schedule for 2011 as they look to set an “international benchmark” for host nations as part of its World Class Events Programme. The calendar represents the final preparations for British sports, athletes and – in some cases – the venues themselves ahead of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Jenny-Wallwork7The major events on this Programme have been announced, with up to 27 events across at least 22 different sports in at least 12 different towns and cities in the UK to be included by the end of 2011. Liz Nicholl, Chief Executive of UK Sport, said “We are delivering the most comprehensive programme of major sporting events ever staged by an Olympic and Paralympic host nation, and setting a new international benchmark for future hosts”.

She continued, “The fantastic calendar of events to be staged here in the UK in 2011 offers the British public a great opportunity to help give our athletes, volunteers and officials the best possible final preparation for their home Games in 2012.”

The focus on preparing for the London Games is clear – since winning the honour of staging the Games, 85% of Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic sports will have staged at least one major World or European level competition on home soil, demonstrating the UK’s capability of successfully delivering high-profile events. During 2011 and the earlier months of 2012, the Olympic and Paralympic venues themselves will host a variety of selected major international events to enable test runs before the Summer Games.

Five such major international events coming to the UK in 2011 include the World Badminton Championships (Wembley), the World Junior Rowing Championships (Eton Dorney), World Triathlon Championships Series (Hyde Park), BMX Supercross World Cup (Olympic Park) and the Modern Pentathlon World Cup Final (Greenwich Park). UK Sport is hoping it will be able to add the Track Cycling World Cup and the Diving World Cup to this for the 2012 calendar, both to be held in the Olympic Park.

Sir Craig Reedie, IOC Executive Board Member, emphasised the contribution that UK Sport’s World Class Events Programme can make to the London 2012 aim to deliver a lasting legacy.

“UK Sport’s World Class Events Programme has provided outstanding event hosting experience for Britain’s national governing bodies in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and will help in attracting, in legacy, more world class events to the country for years to come,” he said.
