Gold Challenge: Diverse Abilities Plus to represent Dorset in Gold Challenge

Diverse Abilities Plus, the Dorset charity that provides a range of support and education services for children and adults with disabilities across the county, is taking part in the Gold Challenge.

The Gold Challenge is a social enterprise which will harness the inspiration of the 2012 Olympics to motivate 100,000 people to become involved in personal sporting challenges and raise millions for charity.

Launched last year, it gives everyone the chance to be part of the London 2012 sporting legacy, and to challenge themselves in multiple Olympic and Paralympic sports. The idea is for participants to take on five, 10, 20 or 30 Olympic or Paralympic sports by 31 December 2012 – with the money raised going to charity.

As the only local Dorset-based charity taking part, Diverse Abilities Plus hopes to raise in excess of £100,000 with the help of the local community.

Entry can either be as a part of a team or as an individual and the Challenge is a unique opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to experience and engage in Olympic and Paralympic sports, from table tennis to cycling or gymnastics, in turn raising funds for their local charity.

Mark Powell, CEO at Diverse Abilities Plus, said: “We are very excited about being the only local independent charity taking part in this national initiative. We have 100 adult team spaces available and in May 2011 a further 100 places for young people aged under 16 will be on offer. As we are anticipating a significant demand of people wanting to take part, I urge willing participants to sign up quickly.”

The Gold Challenge is backed by a range of national sporting partners including the British Olympic and Paralympic Associations and Sport England.

Through the Gold Challenge it is hoped that £20m can be raised by the end of 2012 with over 100,000 people anticipated to take part, reaping the benefits both personally and for their chosen charity. See www.goldchallenge.org to find out more.
