Winter sports: Amy Williams omitted from Team GB World Champs squad

Olympic gold medallist Amy Williams has been left out of the Great Britain team for this month’s skeleton World Championships in Germany.
Williams, who became the first Briton to secure an individual Olympic gold away from the skating rink last year, missed half of this season so failed to gain enough points to allow Britain a third spot in the women’s event.
The available places were awarded to the two current highest ranking British women - Shelley Rudman, the 2006 Olympic silver medalist and Donna Creighton. Rudman is currently ranked second in the world, with Creighton sixth.

GB performance director Andi Schmid said: “We were disappointed not to achieve a third quota place for the women’s team and that made it a particularly difficult decision for us.
“We had to look at performances this season and that meant we had to go with Shelley and Donna.”
Williams became Britain’s first individual Winter Olympics gold medal winner for 30 years with victory in Vancouver in 2010 but has had mixed results on her return.
The Igls World Cup event in January saw the 28-year-old land 12th place, however, a stronger performance at the European Championships later that month secured her a bronze. Rudman took gold.
The women’s World Championships start on February 24 in Konigssee. Kristan Bromley, Chris Type and Andy Wood make up the men’s team for the event.
