It allows you to have a go in a safe, organised and fun environment, often with like-minded people.

Kayaking
Date: May 21-22 2011
Location: Clevedon, North Somerset
Cost: £90
What to expect: This two day, women only non residential course is a great introduction to the sport of kayaking. Held on a sheltered saltwater lake it’s the ideal location for beginners.
During the weekend you will learn all the essential skills to boost your confidence on the water. With a small student to instructor ratio with fully qualified and experienced female coaches you’ll be in great hands. The course will be run by Nomads Kayak Coaching.
Is this course suitable for total beginners? Most of the courses that Nomads run are focused on the beginner to the sport, whether the participant wants to get involved in an active or leisure manner or just to keep up with their own children, friends or social group.
Nomads have seen a rise in women taking up kayaking due to rise of adventure holidays and those wishing to get more involved in sports that mix fitness with an outside experience – lakes, rivers, close to shore sea paddling etc.
Also as adventure racing/multi sport events have boomed in popularity people come to Nomads for specific training for the kayaking leg on these events.
What skills do you need to be a good kayaker? As a beginner, there are no special skills needed other the ability to swim a short distance but a willingness to learn, some degree of fitness, though that is not a prerequisite, but most importantly knowing that you may get wet and you have to accept you’ll have fun.
What can I expect to have learnt by the end of the course? You will learn the basic skills of manoeuvring the kayak on the water, plus basic rescue techniques and health and safety issues related to the kayaking. During the weekend you will be trained/coached in all of these skills and an ongoing assessment will be carried out by our female coaches, with the usual result being that they are able to award the British Canoe Union 1 Star award. This is the basic level by the national sports governing body and gives the foundation stones for people to be active in the sport.
