Taekwondo: Walkden misses out in Moscow

December 13, 2010

This weekend Anastasia Baryshnikova claimed the WTF World Pro Tour title to add to her European title, beating Liverpool’s Bianca Walkden in the process.A packed Moscow Martial Arts Center saw Baryshnikova prevail 2-1 in a close fought final against Korean, Yoo-Sun Ji, earning the Russian a first prize purse of US$10,000. Earlier, Baryshnikova met Walkden in a semi-final in which the young Briton tried in vain to recover from an early head shot, eventually going down 4-2.

Walkden, fresh from victories in the British and French Opens had hoped to finish the year with another trophy and was visibly disappointed to have gone out after one match. World No. 1, Spain’s Rosana Simon, also exited early, going down 13-2 to Ji in what was a surprisingly one sided fight.

In the men’s event, Iran’s Hossain Tajik took the title with the last kick of the match, beating the home favourite Roman Kuznetsov 7-6. And in the showpiece team event, Korea won an explosive encounter against their Russian hosts 50-47 in what was a pulsating ‘tag-team’ contest.

The 5-a-side mixed weight format, in which players compete on a rotation basis during the course of 7 minute rounds, proved to be a real success on the night and is likely to be a concept that the World Taekwondo Federation will want to build upon as they seek to grow the sport globally.
