Sportsister’s cover girl, Amy Williams, awarded MBE

Sportsister’s November cover girl and 2010 Sportswoman of the Year, Amy Williams, was presented with her MBE by The Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace on Thursday. It was the icing on the cake for the 28 year old who has had an incredible year, winning gold and the nation’s hearts simultaneously.

Amy-Williams-SS-AwardsWilliams slid to victory in the skeleton at the March Winter Olympics in Vancouver becoming only the ninth Briton to win gold at the Games and the first individual gold since figure skater, Robin Cousins’ victory at Lake Placid in 1980.

The University of Bath Sports Performance graduate received the honour in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to sport following her outstanding performance at the Games, joining fellow sportswomen Chrissie Wellington and England Women’s football coach, Hope Powell.

Speaking after the event, Williams said, “I was really proud and pleased today. It’s a lovely medal, it’s really pretty, and it’s going to go alongside my gold medal.”

In June she became only the fifth person since the Second World War to be made an Honorary Freeman in her home city of Bath
