Malawi proved they were a force to be reckoned with when they drew 34-34 against Australia at the Netball World Series in Liverpool. After a flurry of double-point goals during their Power Play, it looked as if they may upset the ranks with a victory over the world number one side, but the clock denied them this chance.
After their disappointing performance against Jamaica, England needed to up their game when they faced the world number five side and they certainly enforced this in the opening few minutes. Things began to come unstuck, however, and Malawi crept back into the game taking the score to 7-7 after the first quarter.
England created a three goal advantage early on in the second quarter but Malawi were still able to fast track the ball into their circle from the centre. The hosts managed to hold on to this lead, however, and at half time they led 15-12.

When Malawi chose to enforce their Power Play, England’s Liz Bloor neutralised the impact and Mary Waya, who had been netting doubles with ease against Australia, struggled to replicate this form. Malawi scored six to England’s five and with one quarter to play, it was 25-24 in England’s favour.
The final quarter saw Malawi draw level after a two-pointer from Mwai Kumwenda but tight English defence halted their attack. England were four goals clear before a double pointed closed that gap to just two but they were able to hold on to take the match 32-29.
