Ironman: Swift race rewards Jodie Swallow with Ironman title

Fresh from her World Cup victory last month, Jodie Swallow added to her title collection, claiming the Ironman 70.3 World Championship with an impressive win in Clearwater, Florida.

The 29 year old finished six minutes ahead of her team mate, Leanda Cave, to complete the 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run in 4:6:28.

Swallow came out of the Gulf of Mexico well head of Britain’s defending world champion, Julie Dibens, and flew through the opening stages of the bike ride.

Swallow held on to this early lead and crossed the line with Cave coming in behind to make it a British one-two. Speaking after the race, Swallow said, “Today I just had to believe in myself and what my coach told me. I put my head down from the gun and just didn’t look back until I got into the finish chute.”

To further demonstrate the depth of talent in the country, half the top ten finishers in the women’s field were British with Lesley Peterson (6), Julie Dibens (8) and Emma-Kate Lidbury (10) coming in behind Swallow and Cave.
