Windsurfing: Hamilton tops off season with Windsurfer of the Year award

November 4, 2010

It’s been quite a week for windsurfer, Izzy Hamilton.  Not only did she win her second consecutive RS:X Youth World Windsurfing Championship last weekend in Cyprus, but she was also crowned UK Windsurfing Association (UKWA) Windsurfer of the Year.

Izzy-HamiltonThe vote, organised by UKWA, was open to the general public for one month to vote for their favourite from a shortlist of five top windsurfers.  Other candidates were Max Rowe (freestyle), Robby Swift (wave), Ross Williams (slalom), Steve Thorp (speed).

Hamilton is part of the Samworth Sporting Stars programme, a group of young athletes supported by Samworth Brothers in their quest to reach the top of their sports.  Other young stars in the programme include David Florence (slalom canoe), Laura Samuel (triple jump) and Eden Francis (discus and shot put)

Lindsey Pownall, Group Director of  Samworth Brothers, said, “We are delighted that Izzy has been crowned Windsurfer of the Year.  Everyone at Samworth Brothers’ sites in Cornwall has been supporting Izzy.  This is an exciting time for her and following a very successful season, I think we are all excited about what 2011 will bring.”

Celebrating her success, Hamilton commented, “I’m so happy to have ended the season on such a high note.  Wind conditions were varied and challenging in Cyprus and it’s a great boost to have defended my title.  Samworth Brother’s have been a great support and knowing that I’ve got the Cornish work force behind me really does make a difference.  Now it’s back to uni to continue with my degree before starting training for next year.”
