The weekend saw eight teams battling it out in the FA Women’s Premier League. Sunderland saw themselves rise to the top of the league with a 4-1 victory over title rivals, Blackburn Ladies, and Reading, Nottingham Forest, Watford and Milwall were also in action.

It was a huge victory for Sunderland who went ahead when Sophie Williams scored in the 33rd minute. Their lead doubled when Kelly McDougall scored just a minute into the second half and despite Danielle Sheen taking advantage of a defensive error to take the score to 2-1, another goal each from McDougall and Williams ensured a comfortable win.

Millwall Lionesses moved up to fourth with a 2-1 victory at Watford. The away side went ahead thanks to a goal from Lizzie Edwards after 23 minutes and although Sarah Wiltshere replied for Watford just three minutes later, Ann-Marie Hentherson clinched victory for the lionesses after 66 minutes.

Third place Nottingham Forest Ladies went down 2-0 against Reading Ladies, who scored through Natasha Caswell and Linda Hirons.

Sunderland manager, Mick Mulhern, commented after the match, “A win today was a really massive result for us. We haven’t been playing as well as we can and I asked the players for a response after last week’s disappointing display. To be fair every one of them responded and did their jobs very well. Blackburn are a good side who were obviously top of the league on merit. So to win so well makes it all the more pleasing.”

Speaking after their defeat against Millwall Lionesses, Watford manager, Neil Hart, said, “I can only feel that we were robbed of at least a point today and I’m hoping we’re using up all our bad luck for the season. We played more than well enough in the second half to have deserved the win and whilst the players are understandably frustrated to have got nothing from the game, performance levels like that will see us win before long.”
