Another strong day for the home nations with golds in the pool, on the walking track and in the athletics stadium too.

Hannah Miley had to wait until the final day of competition in the pool to win Team Scotland’s second Commonwealth Games gold medal of the Games in her favoured event, the 400m individual medley.

For 21-year old Miley the Commonwealth crown caps her best year, which also saw her win the European 400m individual medley title. “The time wasn’t quite what I expected but it was all about the race,” she said. “I was really chuffed with the race, especially that last 100m.”

Miley held off Samantha Hamill of Australia to win the 400m individual medley in four minutes 38.83 seconds. England’s Keri-Anne Payne swam to bronze in the same event.

England’s Stephanie Millward earned silver in the Para S9 100m fly, again denied gold by world champion Natalie du Toit.

Ellen Gandy finished third in the 200m butterfly, where Australia’s Jessicah Schipper took the gold medal. It was a great performance for the English swimmer considering she had been sick earlier that day.

On the hockey field Scotland lost to Australia. 5-2 was the final score for the women, Scotland’s goals both coming in a much-improved second half but it was not enough to outplay the reigning Commonwealth Champions. Sam Judge scored Scotland’s first and birthday girl, Ailsa Robertson, got the second.

In England’s last match in Pool B, the women sealed their place in the semi finals of the Commonwealth Games with a professional 3-0 victory over Malaysia. A late first half goal from Slough’s Nicola White was followed by second half finishes from Reading’s Alex Danson and Clifton youngster Georgie Twigg, for whom it was a first international goal at senior level.

Elsewhere Jo Jackson produced an excellent performance as she lead the whole way to win 20km walk gold. It tops off a n excellent season for the Redcar racer.

Whilst Louise Hazel also added to England’s gold tally with an outstanding performance in the heptathlon. Hazel had been third in the heptathlon standings overnight, but moved up to first after leaping a personal best of 6.44m in the long jump. She led into the final event, the 800m with a 120-point cushion, which is a nine second advantage and it was enough to secure th title.

“We’ve had tough conditions here in Delhi, I can’t stress that enough,” she said afterwards, “Realistically, coming here I was outside of the medal chances so to win gold was more than I could have ever expected. I fancied myself as a bronze medallist.”
