Sailing: Macgregor eyes the podium at World Championships

September 21, 2010

Top British sailing talent, Lucy Macgregor, is hoping to convert her consistent season’s form into a medal winning finish at the ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Championships tomorrow in Newport, Rhode Island.

Lucy-Macgregor-in-action-atMacgregor will be joined at the event by her crew that consists of younger sister, Kate, Annie Lush and Mary Rock.  If successful, she will be the first British skipper to mount the podium in 12 editions of the Women’s Worlds, which has been an annual fixture since 1999.

Macgregor and her Skandia Team GBR team mates are one of 20 racing crews from 14 nations that are competing at the World Championships.  They will race as a crew of four in Sonars as opposed to the three-person Olympic racing boat of choice, the Eilliot 6m.

In preparation for the World Championships, the team have been training with their Paralympic team mates, John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas, who raced in the Sonar for both the 2004 and 2008 Paralympics.

Looking to rock the boat is defending World Champion, Nicky Souter, who also added the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta title to her belt just last month.  Anna Tunnicliffe of the USA, Renee Groenveld of the Netherlands and Claire Leroy of France will also pose a tough challenge.

Macgregor commented that even thought they are not racing in Elliots, there are a lot of tactical elements that are relavant to their Olympic Campaign.  Speaking about the Championships, she said, “Having not won an event in the Elliot this year, it’s our focus to get back into the winning mode and manage finals better than we have been, and that starts at the Worlds”.

Racing at the ISAF Women’s World Match Racing Championships gets underway on Tuesday 21st September and concludes on Saturday 25th September.
