Canoeing: Time penalties cost GB medals
Ljublijana was a lively place over the weekend as people came out in droves to watch the last two days of the Canoe Slalom World Championships. With the men winning bronze in the doubles event, spirits were high in the GB camp but a number of time penalties in the women’s event put a stop to the medal count.
Olympian, Fiona Pennie, competed in the K1W final and got off to a promising start. She made her way in style through the top section of the course but a 50 second penalty at gate four ended any medal hopes for the 27 year old. She ended her campaign in eighth place.
In the same event, Lizzie Neave, had an equally impressive start to the race but met a similar fate as she incurred a 50 second penalty after failing to manoeuvre herself fully into gate eight, placing her in 23rd place. These results will come as a disappointment to Neave who won bronze in La Seu D’Urgell, Spain, last year as well as gold in the team event alongside Louise Donington and Laura Blakeman.

The Sunday saw Mallory Franklin fight for a medal in the C1W in its first year as a World Championship event. She got off to a great start, producing the only clean run of the semi final and going through to the final in fifth place. On an extremely demanding course the young Brit handled herself well and looked in contention for a medal. With only one gate to go, however, Franklin caught an edge resulting in a costly paddle back and the 16 year old finished in seventh place.
John Anderson, Performace Director, commented after the weekend, “as a team we will look at these World Championships and be slightly disappointed. We know it’s canoe slalom and a tough course but we have high expectations. We will re-group and come back stronger next year”.
