GB Pentathlon: Fourth place finish for British women in team relay

September 8, 2024

Britain’s women modern pentathletes rounded off their 2010 World Championships campaign with a fourth place finish in the team relay event in China.
The trio of Katy Burke, Heather Fell and Freyja Prentice finished just outside the medals in a repeat of last year’s team relay position, when the championships took place in London.

Fell, Prentice and Samantha Murray had already collected a silver medal in the team competition for Britain at the Chengdu Championships three days ago.

The British team relay trio had to battle back from a disappointing start to the day that saw them finish fifth out of 10 teams in the fencing. They clawed their way up the field with the third fastest swim and progressed to fourth place overall with a solid performance in the ride.

The Brits were 20 points adrift of third placed China – worth just five seconds – going into the run/shoot. But despite a strong performance by Olympic silver medallist Fell, the British team couldn’t secure a place on the podium.

The Russian team took gold – they went into today’s event comparatively fresh after only one of their three-strong relay team had competed in Saturday’s individual final.

“The Russians were magnificent today, there were unbeatable,” said Jan Bartu, Pentathlon GB Performance Director.

“We just couldn’t generate enough energy in the fencing, like many other teams. It was a fight to get through close to the medal positions.

“We have to congratulate the Chinese. It was great to close the championships with the hosts winning a medal,” he added.

The British men’s trio of Jamie Cooke, Sam Weale and Nick Woodbridge finished fourth in the men’s team relay 24 hours earlier.
